Savion Glover: All FuNKD’ Up e entrevista

Matéria do site WTOP traz matéria sobre as atuais atividades do mestre Savion Glover. Por Jason Fraley, em 20.02.2018:

The New York Times called him “the greatest tap dancer who has ever lived.”

This weekend, the inimitable Savion Glover brings his fancy footwork to Washington to kick off his national tour of “All FuNKD’ Up” at the National Theatre on Friday and Saturday nights.

“This is the first stop for this particular production of ‘All FuNKD’ Up,’” Glover told WTOP. “I have a special relationship and dedication to the D.C. area, specifically the dance community, so it was only right that we accepted the invitation from the theater. … I’m encouraging everybody to come on out and just enjoy themselves, enjoy the dance and the environment.”

He’ll be joined on stage by a six-piece band, a company of dancers and even a few surprises.

“My goal and continued effort toward awareness of tap dancing through these productions is just allowing people to enjoy tap dancing as they would enjoy a rock ‘n’ roll concert, gospel concert, jazz concert or what have you. It’s just on that vibe,” Glover said. “[In] ‘All FuNKD’ Up,’ I’m dealing with music that a more familiar audience wouldn’t anticipate me dancing to. It’s funky, it’s loose, it’s live, it’s high energy. I might have a couple special guests from friends.”

The show marks Glover’s return to D.C. after performing with Vanessa Williams in November at the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Tony Bennett held at DAR Constitution Hall.

“That was a really cool night,” Glover said. “I was happy to know that tap dancing would be included in such an esteemed evening. Aside from that, just being there to be able to honor Tony Bennett and his great contributions [to popular music], it was pleasurable.”

While Bennett was born in Queens, New York, in 1926, Glover was born in nearby Newark, New Jersey, decades later in 1973. Rather than pursue the baseball route like his grandfather, who played shortstop in the Negro Leagues, Glover found his way into tap dancing early on.

Savion Glover can’t quite explain why he loves tap dance. It’s too hard to separate the art from himself. “It is simply the voice,” he said. “Tap is everything, because it is my voice.”

Tap has given Glover countless opportunities to meet people who changed his life, to see amazing places, but also to express himself through dance.

(…) The list of who Glover thinks should come to his classes is long: doctors, lawyers, musicians, intellectuals, artists, hunters, rock stars, people who need to pray, people who need therapy, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhists and Atheists.

“Basically everyone should come,” he said.

People just need to come to the classroom ready to learn. A diverse class means they’ll learn from the instructors, but also each other, he said.

Glover also likes mixing up levels and abilities. Even those who are an expert at something can return to the basics and work on honing their skills.

“And those who have never even scratched the surface might be greater than they know,” he said. “I like to bring them together and watch them learn and share.”

Even Glover, one of the best tappers in the world, is still learning and evolving.

“I’m still trying to discover [tap],” he said. “My style is ‘tomorrow.’ I don’t know what my style is, because I’m still, after all these years, trying to figure it out.”

Savion Glover: Novo espetáculo em Nova York

O The New York Times publicou matéria (em 19.06.2013) sobre o novo espetáculo de Savion Glover no Joyce Theater. Um trecho:

Within the first minutes of “STePz,” the playful new Savion Glover show that opened a three-week run at the Joyce Theater on Tuesday, all but one of its essential elements are established. As usual for this virtuoso tap dancer, there’s an amplified platform. Unusually, there’s recorded music. Mr. Glover, at his most relaxed and appealing, is joined by Marshall Davis Jr. and three accomplished female hoofers: Ayodele Casel, Sarah Savelli and Robyn Watson. They’re all having a ball.

The use of recorded music causes some major sound balance problems. But the upside is variety: tracks by John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, but also Prince, Stevie Wonder and Shostakovich. Both this range and Mr. Glover’s colleagues keep him from the insularity that can plague his performances.

A few numbers in, the final element is revealed: two small staircase pyramids like the ones on which Bill Robinson most famously danced almost a century ago. Mr. Glover and Mr. Davis tap up and down and all over these stairs, sometimes while matching the tricky syncopations of a Parker tune exactly. Both men are rhythmically precise, but Mr. Glover can also be physically reckless, thrillingly so, with no loss of precision. As a trumpet tosses a handful of notes skyward, he might hurl himself down the stairs, answering every note as he falls. (…)

Savion Glover, 35 Anos

Savion Glover
Savion Glover
